| Brand New Heavies and Courtney Pine - 23 Oct 08Details Years in the making, The Brand New Heavies sounds today as good as it did in the early '90s, the heyday of the so-called acid jazz movement, and the beginning of a return of sorts to natural sounds and the kind of sexy syncopation that only a live drum kit can generate. The group's powerful instrumental alchemy (the Heavies' main lineup had been jamming together in West London since 1985) was bolstered by the regal vocals of Atlanta, Georgia, native N'Dea Davenport. Following some years without N’Dea on the mic, during which time singers Siedah Garrett, Carleen Anderson and Nicole Russo stepped in to the breach, she is now back alongside the original line up of Simon Bartholomew, Jan Kincaid and Andrew Levy. The BNH sound, based on a mutual love of soul and 70s funk bands such as Mass Production, the Meters, Rufus and James Brown, spawned the hits "Dream Come True", "Never Stop", and "Shelter". Latest album Get Used To It, with N’Dea back in front of the band, produced a great dance-floor led cover version of Stevie Wonder’s “I Don’t Know Why I Love You.” Special guest with the Brand New Heavies is Courtney Pine. Like many of his generation of young, black, UK jazz musicians, Courtney Pine came from a reggae and funk background. Pine is a dazzling performer on many instruments, notably saxophone, clarinet, flute and keyboards. His interest in jazz was fostered when he participated in workshops run by John Stevens. He came to wider public notice as a result of playing with Charlie Watts' Orchestra, George Russell's European touring band and with Art Blakey at the Camden Jazz Festival. In 1987, he played at the Bath Festival with the Orchestre National de Jazz. By that time, his reputation had spread far beyond jazz circles, and his first album was a massive seller by jazz standards. He appeared before a huge worldwide audience at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Concert at Wembley, backing dancers IDJ. Courtney Pine has continued to play in reggae and other pop contexts (Closer To Home), and is a frequent collaborator with UK soul singer Mica Paris. Pine has done much to make jazz palatable for a younger audience, and as such is one of the UK's best ambassadors of the genre. Price: 16.25 Close | ||

| Nitin Sawhney - 3 Nov 08Details One of the most talented and recognized producers and songwriters within the British electronic and fusion music scene, Nitin Sawhney is also a respected actor, writer, and scriptwriter. Conceiving daring theme combinations of electronica-style beats with gleaming pieces of Asian inspirations driven within the trip-hop and jazzy styles, Sawhney delivers exclusive and overwhelming sound pieces, enlightened by his indubitable creative insight. Sawhney first joined James Taylor, with whom he played a series of dates across the U.K. alongside Taylor's quartet. Following the experiment, Sawhney decided on forming his own band, the Jazztones, by that time playing on concerts headlined by DJs like Gilles Peterson. After yet another collaboration, by then with Talvin Singh with whom he assembled the Tihai Trio, the British creator decided to make it on his own, releasing his debut album, Spirit Dance, on his own label in 1993. A few months after, he signed a contract with Outcaste Records, for which he released one of his most acclaimed recordings, Migration, in 1995. Following a year of incessant work, the album Displacing the Priest arrived record stores, again subliming his exceptional creative skills. During this period, Sawhney also continued to dedicate part of his time to writing soundtracks for acclaimed TV series and theater plays, or accomplishing remixing works for artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. At the same time, during the following months, Sawhney recorded his long-awaited fourth album, Beyond Skin, offered in late 1999. Coming after an extensive touring season across the U.K. and Europe alongside artists like Sting, Sawhney recorded what turned out to be his fifth studio record; Prophesy arrived in 2001, again achieving exalted reviews from the media. Sawhney remained busy for the rest of the 2000s, releasing works such as Human and Philtre as well as mix albums like In the Mind of Nitin Sawhney and Fabriclive.15. Price: 17.00 Close | ||

| The Rifles - 30 Nov 08Details Joel Stoker (vocals), Lucas Crowther (guitar), Rob Pyne (bass), and Grant Marsh (drums) create the jaunty garage rock sound of the Rifles. With their Jam-like swagger and matched playfulness to the Kooks, the Rifles came together in London in 2003. They made their performance debut a year later and praise from NME and BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe quickly championed the Rifles' boyish rock & roll fun. Their debut 'When I'm Alone' arrived in May 2005 and did moderately well among their growing fan base, however 'Local Boy' gave the Rifles their first U.K. Top 40 hit that fall. Other chart hits such as the Strokes-like 'Repeat Offender' and 'She's Got Standards' added to the band's heightened popularity in 2006. Produced by Ian Broudie (the Coral, the Subways, I Am Kloot), No Love Lost marked the Rifles' debut full-length in July. Additional U.K. club shows and appearances at the annual V Festival in Chelmsford and Staffordshire followed in August. Price: 12.50 Close | ||

| Skatalites and Iration Steppas - 9 Dec 08Details The Skatalites are a Jamaican music group that played a major role in popularising ska, the first truly Jamaican music created by fusing boogie-woogie blues, rhythm and blues, jazz, mento, calypso, and African rhythms. They recorded many of their best known songs, including PlayGuns of Navarone, in the period between 1964 and 1965, as well as played on records by Prince Buster and many other Jamaican artists. Each year brings another slew of compilations of their recordings from labels around the world. Decades on, their music remains timeless. Iration Steppas was originally set up by Mark Iration as a sound system in Leeds, where he played the latest sounds at blues dances, clubs and parties. With a posse of like-minded individuals Iration toured the country absorbing various sounds. With Papa Sam, the sound initially performed under the name Ital Rockers Hi Fi. Notable influences were Jah Shaka and Jah Tubby. Iration acknowledged that he was amazed by Jah Tubby's collection of original dub plates when he secured his first acetates. A sound system clash in Leeds against Jah Shaka resulted in praise from the legendary soundman, encouraging Iration to continue in the business. In 1993, Iration linked up with Dennis Rootical (under the guise of Kitachi), performing the leftfield dope beat sound. Live appearances by the duo were greeted with enthusiasm, playing festivals and clubs around the UK. They are also acknowledged as being the first to utilize DAT recordings of their own tunes at the High Rise studio in Leeds and to mix them live. With Jack Rouble joining the group, their reputation grew and Iration Steppas released the classic "Scud Missile" in 1993. Acclaimed by the media as Jah Shaka's "enlightened offspring", they followed the hit with two 10-inch releases, "Reminiscence Dub" and "Killimanjaro" both of which were featured on their debut album. As Kitachi they released three dope beat singles, "Spirit", "Scratch Remix" and "Heavyweight". | The Wedding Present - 16 Dec 08Details “The boy Gedge has written some of the best love songs of the Rock n Roll Era. You may dispute this, but I’m right and you’re wrong!” John Peel. The Wedding Present have had eighteen UK Top 40 hit singles… not bad for a band that has, from its inception, stubbornly refused to play the record industry's game. That was back in 1985 when David Lewis Gedge boarded a National Express coach in London with 500 records packed into a pair of his mother's suitcases. In this fashion, the debut single Go Out And Get 'Em Boy! was collected from the pressing plant, delivered to the distribution company, and The Wedding Present was born. That pioneering spirit has been at the core of the band's philosophy ever since. From George Best, the first full-length release on their own Reception Records onwards, the band has charted an appealing, if often eccentric, course of its very own. Price: 15.50 Close | ||

| Northern Music Presents The Farm - 19 Dec 08Details The Farm was formed in Liverpool in 1983 by singer Peter Hooton, a one-time youth worker searching for a musical outlet to voice his political concerns. Initially, The Farm’s musical style had more of a northern soul feel to it, and while they released a handful of independent singles it wasn’t until they collaborated with dance producer Terry Farley that they came to the attention of the record-buying public at large. Farley was behind the sample-heavy cover of the Monkees’ ‘Stepping Stone’ which although it just missed entering the Top 40 in 1990, it put The Farm on the map as a full live band with strong ties to club culture, who readily embraced the use of samples and computerised beats to enhance their sound. The Farm’s next single ‘Groovy Train’ made it into the Top Ten, while the anthemic follow-up ‘All Together Now’ - based on the melody of Pachelbel's Canon in D - landed in the Top Five and sold over 500,000 copies. This was rounded off with the release of their debut LP Spartacus which went straight in at Number One in 1991 and made the rest of the world sit up and take notice. For many, their output in the early 90s defined the mood of this era and can be held up as an example of the goodwill message prevalent in the club scene. It is with pleasure that we welcome the Farm live at Stylus in a night sure to remind us of the days when jeans were baggy, faces were smiley and the charts were basking in the warm afterglow of the second Summer of Love.
